The Importance of 2 Photographers & Working a Pose

One thing that we feel pretty strongly about over here at Cole Joseph Photography is the idea of having two photographers for weddings.  There are soooo many reasons why Nicole and I feel this way and that’s what this blog post is about – to help aid and educate the reasons why its important to have two photographers on your big day.  I will order the list of reasons below in order of importance in my opinion -

1. To provide a different perspective – this can be a different angle of the same shot and/or utilizing a completely different lens etc…
2. A 2nd set of eyes – a subtle difference of point #1 above is simply having another set of eyes to capture moments that could otherwise slip by simply because its impossible to be everywhere or see everything at the same time.  Real life examples of this with us is often candid shots of the family members during the ceremony while the other photographer is focused on the bride & groom, or detail shots while other photographer is doing family portraits or getting ready shots.
3. Having two photographers with multiple lenses at same time = ready for each and every shot.  We shoot with 3 cameras and 3 different lenses at the same time which enables us to switch between different lenses at a snap of a finger rather than being forced to take time changing lenses which can take your eye off the action and ultimately miss a moment.

Regardless of if you have 1 photographer or 2 I always try to make my images more interesting by shooting from different angles – lets face it, many times, shooting straight on is plain boring.  By shooting from an angle higher or lower photos can have a lot more “pop” or “wow” factor to them.  In addition to using different angles we often will keep our subjects in the same position but then work the pose by walking around them and shooting different points of view.  To give you readers a couple “behind the scenes” shots Nicole has snapped a few shots of my that I have included from our last couple engagement sessions.  Its always interesting to see the final shot from my camera and then see how I look from Nicole’s camera hahaha so hope you enjoy those and see me contorting my body or laying on the floor to get a cool shot:)

Here are some photos that showcase point #1, providing a different perspective from the exact same pose and show some of the “behind the scenes” shots.

What I hope this post does is enlighten you of some of the benefits of hiring a photographer for your wedding that offers two photographers within their packages.  Note in my opinion the real benefit with two photographers comes from being able to fully utilize different vantage points and perspective, not merely shoot over the lead photographers shoulders.

Enjoy!

This is what I call “working a pose” started with the shot on the left and then got a completely different shot just by walking to the side and getting low to their level.

Nicole’s camera (top), my shot below – different lenses = different perspective of same exact moment.  Both are awesome shots in my opinion.

My vantage point (above), Nicole’s is below… How cute is this sequence!!?

My shot (above) standing on fountain – Nicole’s shot below…

This is pretty cool to see the set up of the shot and the final image below.  Can’t be afraid to get dirty….too bad I didn’t have Nicole with me when I was laying on my stomach on the railroad tracks!

Serena & Pedro – Balboa Park and Rancho San Diego Engagement Session

We had a great time hanging out with Serena & Pedro last weekend.  Nicole and I share something big in common with these two as well………they met at Sea World:)  Similar to a couple other brides and grooms of ours and also numerous of our friends, working at Sea World has created many long lasting friendships and marriages too!  We started our day off at Balboa Park, one of our favorite places to shoot and then worked our way out east to get some outdoorsy type shots, these two were soooo natural in front of the camera and we got a ton of great shots!

Serena and Pedro will be tying the knot in Zion National Park next June and we can’t wait to capture their big day for them!

Enjoy the photos:)

What to Wear for Engagement Session?!

Gooooood morning!  Happy Sunday to you all…OK many, many people have been asking lately about what they should wear for their engagement photos so with the help of our facebook followers who requested a blog post on this, here we go.

Disclaimer #1 – I myself am no Joan Rivers when it comes to “fashion” but, I can at least attest to what I think looks good from a photographer’s perspective.
Disclaimer #2 – This is a topic that can have differing opinions from different people themselves and even what other photographer’s may recommend to their clients, so with that said, this post reflects solely my own opinions:)

Tip #1 – Jeans always look good.  I always tell my clients this when they have no idea what to where.  I feel they look great in color, vintage edits and B&W or Sepia as well.  They give texture and contrast to the photo.  Also – since most of us where jeans quite often anyway, this automatically makes us feel natural and confident wearing.

Tip #2 – Do NOT try and match outfits.  Some people think matchy, matchy looks nice, but its a recipe for all subjects to merge into each other in the photo or even worse someone wears a different shade of red or blue or even black.

Tip #3 – Black is a color that looks great on everyone.  Unless photographing a night session, having 1 person wearing black provides good contrast for photos – also looks great in a variety of edits and is a “slimming” color.

Tip #4 – Even though we don’t want both people to be wearing identical outfits, the outfits should “work” and complement each other.  No “clashing” outfits or colors.

Tip #5 – Don’t be afraid of wearing a “print” just be aware of it.  If one person was wearing vertical stripes and the other had horizontal that likely wouldn’t work too well, but, if one is wearing a solid dark color and the other is rockin’ a plaid button-up or a dress with a nice print on it, then go for it!

Tip #6 – Match your outfit with the location – don’t wear your high heels for photos at the beach and conversely if you are going for a urban downtown chic session than don’t be crusin’ with your rainbow sandals on.

Tip # 7 – Don’t over think “what to wear” – be yourself.  Find clothes that you feel comfortable in and most important clothes that are “YOU”.   At the end of the day there are ZERO rules, just helpful guidelines.  These photos are for YOU and put yourself into clothes that you are going to feel confident and natural in.

Tip #8 – No neon/bright colors! I’ve never had this problem since its no longer the 80s but figured I better add it to the list, just in case…

Bonus Tip #9 – Don’t wear your sunglasses when driving down to the photo session, you want your eyes to get acclimated and adjusted to the natural light of the day to prevent a whole shoot of squinting.  We always do our very best to work in even shade and get away from the sun but locations like the beach sometimes there is no where to hide.

For all the visual learners out there lets take a look at some examples:

Leah’s boots worked well with the outdoorsy portion of the session, as did Lance’s plaid.  I don’t find the plaid being distracting since Leah has a solid color on and of course the jeans work well with this vintage edit and also full color and B&W.  The blue and black combo worked well too, for the beach, her necklace adds some dimension to the outfit.

These next shots I wanted to demonstrate how great black and jeans (and boots) can look… Desiree’s (and Brian’s in the bottom shot) neutral color is nice and complements the other darker color well

Great color combo here…

I wanted to use this photo primarily to show how a print can work and add color to a shot.  Of course if Wes had on something other than a dark single color it wouldn’t have worked as well.

Jeans ALWAYS look good, Jill and Richard got this shot in both the vintage and B&W and I love them both equally:)

Another example of pairing a plaid or print with a single color…

Hey how about a few shots of yours truly and my beautiful wife back when WE were in the hot seat…lets see if we practice what I preach!
Photos by: Ann Sumi Photography

For me I simply did 1/2 of the shoot with a black mini pinstripe dress shirt and then went with a black T-shirt since I didn’t want the whole shoot to be so “dressy”.  What can I say I am a T-Shirt and shorts/jeans kind of guy;)

Anyways – I hope that this answers some questions that you may have an have found this informative….now, I got to go and get ready for an engagement shoot!

Jessica & Wes – A Mission Bay Engagement Session…

Today’s blog post features my good friend Wes and his lovely fiance Jessica!  Wes and I go waaaaay back.  Wes and I play music together, not only in our current band but in our previous band as well.  For those of you who aren’t musicians and play in bands I always tell people that playing in a band with 4 other guys can be very tough with different personalities, agendas, priorities, skills etc…needless to say Wes and I have played music together for years and I can vouch for him saying he is one stand up dude!  But I digress…..Jessica and Wes pretty much tore it up at their session bringing all kinds of style, looks and of course their very own personality into their photos.  The sky was nice and grey which most don’t like but for us photographers we love it:)

Ok, ok….ON with the photos…..

Desiree & Brian – a L’auberge Del Mar, Train Tracks & Torrey Pines Beach Session

Desiree and Brian came into town from Scottsdale, Arizona and luckily we were able to squeeze their engagement session in for them.  Man o man did we have lots of fun, these two were super natural in front of the camera.  We started off the morning at L’auberge Del Mar and then made our way to some train tracks that I have been dying to shoot at for a while while ending on a hike at Torrey Pines State Beach where we’d end at the beach getting a little wet and sandy.  I always recommend saving the beach for the end of the shoot that way we can get as dirty as we need to and then its fine – plus that’s part of the fun anyway right??

This was a pretty hard shoot for me to pick a favorite….can you?  Let me know at the bottom of the post if you have any in particular you like or any other thoughts:)

These two will be back in August for their wedding and I know their wedding photos will be off the charts as well, can’t wait guys….see ya sooooon!

Cole

I love shooting at L’auberge – so many cool nooks and cranny’s and of course gorgeous landscaping…

Probably my favorite candids of the day – after Brian yelled “TRAIN!” so we all got off the tracks and moved our stuff we were standing there with it going by blowing our hair (well Desiree’s…) and I said screw it lets snap some photos this is pretty sweet!

This is me, laying on my stomach in the middle of the tracks….hey ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get the right angle!

Love the cliff backdrop on both of these….they sunny haze works for these shots in my opinion.

Love this B&W!!

They even decided to be brave and get in the water…it was cold so just a little bit:)

Playing in the water a bit and laying around getting sandy is almost a necessity for awesome beach photos, I am glad these two had no problems with that, as such we got some sweeeet shots like this one below.
